Check out this fun little edit put together by our friends from a Prince William Sound ski trip to Montague Island, spring 2026. (Thanks BD!)
Alaska is an amazing place, wild and remote, which is part of why we live here and why people keep coming back to visit. Access can often be a challenge, especially off the road system. For those seeking snow and adventure away from the beaten path, the Thalassa serves as a unique floating basecamp for your adventures.
Spend the day in the backcountry with your group and return to comfortable accommodations onboard the Thalassa for the evening. There are 3 double bunk staterooms with electric heat and boot dryers for everyone. A roomy wheelhouse and a full kitchen (galley) are available to nourish you after a long day of fun, complete with a record player and a curated vinyl collection to feed your soul.
We are not a guide service or hunting transport service. We provide access to public lands that are otherwise very difficult to reach. The adventurers using our services are experienced backcountry users. We use the platform of the Thalassa as a mobile 'hut' for self-guided adventures. Your group is expected to research your own approaches and lines, as these locations are remote, far from lift lines and resort restaurants.
With 25 years of experience in commercial fishing in Prince William Sound, Captain Ryan Schuetze knows how to get you to your destination. If the weather takes a turn, we'll find safe harbor in one of Prince William Sound's many protected bays and coves. Access to the beach is provided via our skiff. Kayaks and standup paddle boards can also be made available.

When Ryan first moved to Alaska in 1999, he fell in love with the remote and wild terrain surrounding our little land locked community of Cordova. As a terrestrial being, this remoteness can be a blessing and a curse- leaving ones adventures to be limited by access. After years of commercial fishing and running a variety of boats, motoring by these glorious mountains in Prince William Sound- Ryan and Melissa were able to purchase the Thalassa in the spring of 2022.
As a first generation fisherman, it has taken years to build this dream of ours into a reality. The access a boat opens up is something that not everyone has and we don't take it lightly. There are other transportation or water taxi services available, but it may leave you at only one spot, camping in the rain while trying to start a fire. With the Thalassa, the ability to stay mobile and change locations if weather or conditions go south, while warm and dry no matter what it's doing outside is a game changer. Charge hard in the day and recharge in the evenings- starting fresh and well rested.
To spend time onboard a working commercial fishing boat is a truly unique experience. Ryan is happy to share his experience as a mariner, living and working in Prince William Sound.
There are 3 double bunk state rooms with electric heat in each room. Sheets and pillows are provided, a light sleeping bag is likely all you'll need to stay cozy.
The base price does not include food or drinks, allowing clients to build their own menus according to their dietary preferences. If you would prefer meals prepared, that can be arranged at an additional cost.
We have one bathroom (called the head onboard a boat) containing a sink, stall shower, and incinerator toilet. The Incinolet is US Coast Guard approved, and does not discharge waste into the water as is often the case with other vessels. With a 4,000 gallon fresh water tank, there is ample water for showers.
The access we provide gets you to the beach, from there you choose your own adventure. To best enjoy the snow, ski touring setups or split boards seem to be the best mode of travel. Adventurers should be prepared for the varied conditions of wild snow- with climbing skins, ski crampons and of course all the safety gear for avalanche preparedness and self-rescue.
Kayaks and Stand Up Paddleboards can be made available if you'd like to take a day exploring the coastline instead of the ridgeline.
We encourage the use of radios for group communication (BCA Links or Rocky Talkies are popular options) The boat uses marine VHF to schedule skiff pickups and will provide a handheld marine VHF for your use..
There is ample storage for gear onboard, both on deck and inside the vessel. A spacious deck, rooftop storage and a heated workshop area inside the boat ensures your gear stays ready for action.
Weather in Alaska can be all over the place. We may need to find another approach to the beach if the weather does not permit us to land. We can usually find an area that will allow us to get to the beach. In the unlikely event that we can not get to the beach that day, the boat is equipped with a curated collection of books and vinyl records, as well as internet service. For those that appreciate the classics, a game of cribbage is a common go-to onboard fishing boats. Safety is paramount, and we won't risk anyone's well being by forcing mother nature.
When you book transportation with us, you plan with your backcountry team. The group you assemble should be people that have similar goals in mind, with a focus on safety and looking out for each other. Ryan Schuetze is the vessel captain, owner and operator of the Thalassa.
As mentioned above, these trips are for DIY-minded adventurers who are comfortable in the backcountry. There are a number of maps, apps, and websites available to help your research. Gaia GPS, OnX, and USGS topo maps are all good resources.
Cancellation policy: A 50% deposit secures your dates. This is 100% refundable up to 90 days prior and 50% refundable 60 days prior. There are no refunds less than 60 days prior to departure. Payment in full is due 7 days prior to departure.
We highly recommend purchasing trip insurance- there are a number of providers available which you can research online. Weather in Alaska is very dynamic and conditions can change quickly. We strive to provide access to these wild places with safety as a priority, this can postpone travel dates potentially through the entirety of your booked trip. Wind, rain, avalanche conditions... All real possibilities.
